How to Write Better AI Prompts

The difference between a mediocre AI output and a great one almost always comes down to the prompt. Here's what separates good prompts from bad ones:

1. Give the AI a Role

Instead of just asking a question, tell the AI who it's pretending to be. You are a senior copywriter with 10 years of experience writing for SaaS companies produces dramatically better copy than just write me some copy.

2. Add Constraints

Word count, format, tone, what to include, what to avoid. Under 100 words, conversational tone, lead with the benefit not the feature gives the AI guardrails that prevent generic output.

3. Provide Examples

If you have an example of what "good" looks like, include it. The AI will match the style and quality of your example far better than following abstract instructions.

4. Use Brackets for Customization

Mark the parts that change with [BRACKETS]. This makes your prompts reusable templates instead of one-time asks. Write a cold email to [TARGET AUDIENCE] about [PRODUCT] becomes a template you use forever.

5. Ask for Variations

Always add Give me 3-5 variations at the end. The first output is rarely the best one. Having options lets you pick the winner or combine the best parts of each.
